Integrated Design Schematics
Critic: Ted Krueger

A design for a science center located on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY in what is considered the "Science Corridor" portion of campus. This science center would create a hub for the School of Science within RPI as well as further promote both educational and professional research happening.

The Center for Science program consists of: an observatory location, a small library, laboratories for educational and private research with and without prep space, department offices for faculty classroom spaces for each department within the School of Science, general leture halls, seminar spaces and open lounge and study spaces for students and researchers. Besides just designing, there was a focus on creating ADA accessible spaces as well as proper fire stairs and other important code related spaces.
This design features a curved corner "horsehoe-like" design that creates a dynamic functional form with an inner courtyard space. A curtain wall facade provides plenty of natural light into the building as well as the opportunity to create an open environment feel for collaboration and innovation within the world of science on campus. RPI's campus consists of mostly brick buildings and the band of copper colored panels that wrap around the slab edge is designed to mimic this look and color of the surrounding brick while also bringing and a new modern look to campus.
