A design for a small art museum located right outside Dia:Beacon in Beacon, New York, that coincides with the current existing museum.
Precedent studies began with choosing a painting and a sculpture from Sol LeWitt. These works of art were analyzed based off of the rule systems they were created on and altering these rule systems to create several iterations. This then would influence the overall design for the museum.
The required program of the museum includes space for administration, education, events, art storage and mechanical space. Retail space must also be included as well as a cafe.
Two types of galleries are included. Those on the lower floors will house temporary collections to be on view and the upper galleries will house a permanent Sol LeWitt collection.
A main focus throughout this design was the use of subdivision created through the altering of the rule system. The subdivisions within the design allow for an abstract and unique spatial experience throughout with geometrical forms constantly protruding and receding, creating a geometric "glitch."
